Wine Roads of Attica

Region: Attica – A Land of Wine with History and Modern Dynamism

Brief Presentation of the Region

Attica, centered around the basin of Athens and extending to the plains and semi-mountainous areas of Eastern Attica (such as Markopoulo, Koropi, Spata, Pikermi, and Marathon), has a long-standing winemaking tradition, stretching from antiquity to the present day. It is one of Greece’s most historic wine regions, referenced by Socrates, Aristophanes, and Theophrastus.

The geography of the region is defined by a mild Mediterranean climate, abundant sunshine, low rainfall, and clay or limestone soils. The natural landscape varies – from the plains of Mesogaia to coastal areas and low hills.

  • White varieties: Savatiano, Malagousia, Assyrtiko
  • Red varieties: Agiorgitiko, Mandilaria, Merlot

Advantages of the Region for Wine Tourism

  • Proximity to Athens: Just 30–45 minutes from the capital’s center, Attica offers the perfect opportunity for day wine tours or short weekend getaways.
  • Available infrastructure and experiences: Many wineries in the area have well-organized facilities for hosting visitors, wine tastings, guided tours, and collaborations with local producers.
  • Accessibility: Close to Athens International Airport – an ideal gateway for international tourists.
  • Combination with culture and the sea: Attica uniquely blends the wine tourism experience with archaeological sites, traditional villages, and coastal routes.

Non-Wine Elements That Enhance the Experience

  1. Tumulus of Marathon & Marathon Archaeological Museum: Connects wine to classical history and the roots of democracy, in an area where ancient worship of Dionysus also took place.
  2. Marathon Lake & Hiking Trails: An ideal destination for nature lovers and families – combining wine tourism with outdoor recreation.
  3. Eastern Attica Beaches (Schinias, Nea Makri, Loutsa): Visitors can enjoy a complete experience – wine tasting with the Aegean Sea and sunset as a backdrop.
  4. Sounio and the Temple of Poseidon: One of the most iconic monuments of antiquity, offering panoramic views of the Aegean – perfect for sunset after a day of wine touring.
  5. Keratea Environmental Awareness Park (Gerania): Combines nature trails, environmental education, and recreational areas for all ages.
  6. Archaeological Site of Brauron (Spata): The ancient temple of Artemis Brauronia, located in a rare natural and archaeological setting.
